Temperature For Leopard Geckos - How to Measure It

Any responsible owner knows that the temperature for leopard geckos is very important. Leopard geckos need a warm area in their tanks of about 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and a temperature gradient down to about 80 degrees Fahrenheit in another part of their tank. It's simply not acceptable for a leopard gecko owner to not cater for the needs their pet in this regard.

Digital Heat Gun

Providing a heat source in a leo's tank is not difficult - a reflector lamp, heat pad or flexible heat tape will do an admirable job. What's not so easy is ensuring that the heat source you have is producing the right amount of heat. Too little and your leo will be sluggish, sick and unhappy; too much and it'll get overheated or could even get burned.

Digital Heat Gun

What you need, then, is a way of measuring the heat that your heat source is putting out so that you can then regulate it appropriately (the regulation part can normally be taken care of with a simple plug-in dimmer switch). Below are some of the options for measuring temperature. Keep in mind that what needs to be measured is the temperature of the substrate that your leo is walking around on and not the temperature of the air near it - this is an important distinction.

Ordinary aquarium thermometers

Aquarium mercury-type thermometers are robust and accurate. They come with a stainless steel mount and it's easy to fix a couple of them in your leo's tank. However, the potential hazard to using mercury aquarium thermometers is that they need to be touching the surface of the substrate. If they're not touching the substrate then they'll be measuring air temperature, not surface temperature.

Remote digital sensor units

This type of device is essentially a digital thermometer with a probe on the end of a wire. Stick the probe into the substrate, fix the readout somewhere you can see it (it'll have suction caps), and voila - accurate and constantly-updated substrate temperatures.

Infrared temperature guns

A temperature gun is a thermometer, but quite a different one. You 'aim' it at something and press a button, and it fires an infrared cone that bounces back to the unit and gives you a temperature reading of that surface without needing to make contact with it. The best thing about a temp gun is that it accurately tells you the surface temperature of whatever you point it at, not the air temperature near it like normal thermometers can.

Herpstats

With most ways of measuring temperature you end up with a manual two-stage process: first measure the temperature; then adjust the heating device accordingly using a dimmer switch. Herpstats are great, because what they do is measure the temperature with a probe, then adjust the power that's going to the heating device automatically until the temperature matches the one you punch into the herpstat. This is definitely the five-star option!

So, as you can see there are different ways to measure the temperature for leopard geckos depending on your budget and your preferences.

Wagner Power Products 503008 HT 1000 1,200-Watt Heat Gun Overview

Great for removing paint, loosening floor tiles, thawing frozen pipes, and busting rusted bolts, this 1,200-watt heat gun performs numerous projects around the house or shop. The ideal, general purpose heat gun suitable for a majority of heating applications, this unit features two temperature settings for a wide variety of applications. This a lower 750-degree F setting is great for thawing pipes slowly, defrosting freezers and more. The 1,000-degree setting strips paint from furniture, loosens rusted bolts and nuts, and makes it easy to shape plastic piping for plumbing to name a few. With 4,100 Btu's those temperatures apply to larger work surfaces farther away from the unit, too. Just plug the gun into any household outlet, turn it on, and select the appropriate temperature to restore furniture, strip funky-colored kitchen cabinets, or remove paint from hard-to-sand wood trim. The gun is also great for heating up plastic film to insulate drafty windows, defrosting freezers, drying plaster, forming and bending plastic pipe, and more! --Brian D. Olson

Embossing Techniques For Your Scrapbook Ideas

Embossing is one of the many techniques you can use for your scrapbook ideas. It is a great way of making an image stand out.

Digital Heat Gun

Basic heat embossing - ink the stamp that you would like to emboss and press firmly onto your chosen piece of card or scrapbook paper. Sprinkle embossing powder over the stamped image removing any excess embossing powder by lightly tapping the paper or card. Then use a heat gun to melt the powder giving the image a raised effect.

Digital Heat Gun

Double embossing - ink your chosen rubber stamp, press onto card or paper and emboss as normal. Use pens, water pencils, chalks or any other craft supplies to color your image. Sponge or brush clear ink onto the colored areas of the image.

Pour clear embossing powder over the entire image and heat with a heat gun.

Over embossing - This technique is used to create a really glossy image.

As before, ink and rubber stamp an image of your choice. Use clear enamel embossing powder and heat from underneath either your scrapbook paper or card rather than from the top. Once the powder has completely melted repeat the process over and over until a smooth shiny surface appears.

Rainbow Embossing - Use a clear ink pad to ink your rubber stamp. Make sure you use ink that stays wet for quite some time as you will be using more than one colour of embossing powder. Rubber stamp your image and pour one colour over part of the image then shake off the excess and use another colour for the rest of the image. Heat with a heat gun for a rainbow effect.

Clear on clear embossing - This type of embossing looks best on darker pieces of card or scrapbook paper. Use a clear ink to rubber stamp your image and emboss with clear embossing powder. This will give you an image that is elegant and will catch your eye with out being too bold.

Embossing is not just used with rubber or clear stamps it can also be a great way of making the edges of a card look totally different. Using a dauber ink or a small ink pad dab ink all around the edge of a card and emboss as normal.

When embossing any handmade cards or scrapbook page layouts always ensure the surface is clean. One tip I have discovered is to wipe a small amount of baby powder over the scrapbook paper or card before you stamp your image and then add the embossing powder. Adding the baby powder ensures the embossing powder only sticks to the inked images and does not stick to the fibres of the card or paper.

You may find when heating your image the piece of card bends. Patience is the key here. Do not add the image to your scrapbook or card project straight away. Use a heavy book to flatten the image before adding it to your card or scrapbook page layout.

Working With Digital Print Outs in Card Making

Purchasing Digital Stamps, or Digi Stamps as they are commonly known, is a great way of building a library of images and is much more cost effective than purchasing lots of rubber and acrylic stamps. Many card makers and scrap bookers love to colour Digital images using Copic Marker pens but this can create some problems depending on which type of printer you have.

Digital Heat Gun

Some printer inks work really well with Copic markers, some work if you heat set the ink before you start to colour, some just need to "rest" before colouring and some just do not work well at all and the ink will bleed.

Digital Heat Gun

As a rule of thumb Copic Marker pens will work well with any digi images printed out on a laser printer or a normal standard photocopier. Laser printers and photocopiers work using a toner based system which means that the image is printed onto the paper by the machine actually melting the toner onto the paper. This means that the ink in the Copic Markers which is an alcohol ink will not bleed into the image lines.

However most home printers are still InkJet printers and the ink formula in different models can differ. The only way you can be sure that your printer is suitable to use with Copic Markers is by testing it out first before launching into a larger project which could get ruined. Older InkJet printers seem to cause the most problems but if yours is newer do not automatically assume that it will work well.

Simply choose the paper type that you plan to work with and print out an image onto the paper. First of all choose a corner of the image to work straight on with your pens - if it does not cause "bleeding" your printer should be fine to use. I would recommend using a light coloured pen so you can easily see if the image edge bleeds.

If it does bleed then print out the same image again on another part of the paper and this time let it rest for a few minutes before again trying to colour If this again does not work, reprint once more and then heat set the image using a heat gun before starting to colour.

If you find your printer ink will not work with the Copic pens after trying all these methods then you can consider still using the Copics but stopping your colouring just short of the printed edge which you would normally be colouring up to. If you are then not satisfied with the finished work I would just accept that you need to look to another medium for colouring in your Digi-Stamps!

Gun Safe Reviews and Tips On Getting the Best Gun Safe Cabinet

Buying Tips For Finding a Quality Gun Safe Cabinet

Digital Heat Gun

When you buy a long gun safe, you want to be sure you're not getting taken for a ride. Here are some qualities of high-quality safes that you should watch out for.

Digital Heat Gun

First off, you should expect to shell out about 00 on up for a decent safe. Contrary to popular belief, the major makers know the best placement for hinges is on the outside (unless you're buying a Grade 1 European safe - they place the hinges on the inside, and have solid construction, no complaints here). The reason American safe makers place the hinges on the outside is so that the thieves waste precious time attacking that area, as opposed to the lock itself. They'll get nowhere on a quality long gun safe.

The interior should be, at the very least, 58-inches high. The reason for this is you'll have clearance then for your 30-inch-long barrels, and will allow for shelving near the top for your smaller items. Other great features to watch for, though they may be installed after-market, are a rotational rack, and a stack of drawers for your smaller guns and other items. After all, if you're going to shell out this much money, you may as well be organized to boot.

As to locking mechanism, the dials made by Sargent & Greenleaf®, whose parent company is Stanley Security Solutions®, are top-shelf according to many in the industry. They aren't the only name in the industry, but if they were, your guns would be in good hands! If you want to go with a digital combination, make sure it's a UL Listed Type II or better, or Type I (commercial grade electrical) lock. Anything less is risky business.

Do your homework as to fire-proofing material, and there are plenty of opinions on this subject. Many manufacturers are using the UL listing for fireboard (a.k.a. a thin layer of drywall) to list their safes as a fireproof gun safe. This isn't exactly top of the line quality, so really inquire from your manufacturer of choice how they construct their fireproof gun safe doors, walls and floor. A thin layer of drywall sandwiched between two thin sheets of sheet metal isn't a quality safe!

The weight of your fireproof gun safe - especially the fireproof gun safe! - should be at least 750lbs. The steel should be at the very least 8 gauge steel for burglary protection, the better models use fire cladding and solid steel plating. By the way, when buying a gun safe cabinet, the lower the gauge of steel, the thicker the material.

Security on your gun safe cabinet should be at least a UL-listed "RSC" (residential security container) rating - this is bottom shelf security and is not tested to withstand break-ins nor fire damage. This is the minimum rating, and should be able to buy you FIVE minutes under a theft attempt. Given minimal tools, in other words, a thief off the street will be able to crack open an RSC-rated safe.

Your better bet is to buy a European Grade 1, or UL Listed TL-15 or TL-30. There are other, higher ratings for safes that pass tests that UL conducts that include explosion endurance, impact resistance, 6-sided attacks, and torch attacks, but usually such ratings incur exorbitant fees and aren't typical for residential use. For that reason they won't be covered in our gun safe reviews, but know that if your gun safe cabinet has these ratings, you've bought a quality safe. One of the best fireproofing materials for fireproof gun safe construction is Palusol®. This material expands with heat and keeps out fire, smoke and usually water as well.

Be sure the exterior is rust-resistant as well - this safe should give you more than a lifetime of endurance. Also, gun racks, drawers, felt lined shelves, an interior lighting system, a bolt-pattern to secure it in place, and a dehumidifying system should all be included or at least installed at some point.

Gun Safe Reviews of Great Gun Safe Cabinets

Onto the gun safe reviews!

Ft. Knox "Legend" Series Gun Safe Cabinet

Ft. Knox "Legend" series is their top-level line of safes. They are made with a 3/16-inch steel body plate, and are also protected by a 10-gauge, reinforced steel lining. The doors on the Legend series are 1-3/4-inches thick, reinforced and fire-rated. Mind you, the 1-3/4-inches is an "overall thickness," so it isn't fully steel! Actually, the steel is only 5/16-inch at the door, so just a little over a quarter inch. In other words, a good measure of that thickness is drywall or "fireboard" as they call it - simply the same stuff you can punch a hole through with your hand in your home or office. The good news is that there is a qualified "hard plate" and ball bearings to foil drilling attempts.

Ft. Knox has their own locking mechanism - the "Rack and Pinion," which is a multi-gear system. They do have a mechanical re-locking system, but reviews seem consistent that their construction is decent. Their locking bolts are 100% independent of one another, and are comprised of up to 55 gears which in turn operate up to (28) 1-1/2-inch bolts. That's good security, as are the corner bolts in the door.

Other features are the UL Listing, and certified fire protection at 1680 degrees F, for 90 minutes. It should be noted that their fire proof method is simply 2 layers of drywall, so not necessarily the best way to go as far as options are concerned. A few nice touches are the lights package, carpet lining, "limited lifetime" warranty, dehumidifier, remote relocker, and optional biometric locking mechanism. A good start to our gun safe reviews, all told.

On a Budget? Try this on Offer From Granite Security®

Weighing in at under 600 pounds, and sporting an economic 9.99 price tag, Granite Security® (who makes Winchester® safes), makes a Sam's Club product that is available when it's available. This safe is better than the other bargain gun safe cabinet fodder on the market, though it doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles. Many would-be gun safes on the market are little more than sheet metal lockers, and set you back about -400.

Not this safe. This safe has a place on our gun safe reviews because it is a quality product for the price. It comes with 1-inch-thick bolts, 1-inch-thick door jamb, and the walls weigh in at 12-gauge steel. With that level of protection, it's been given the bare essential UL RSC rating, which is the lowest you want for a gun locker. It isn't as high as it should be - only 56-inches on the interior, which means you'll need to either modify the top shelf to accommodate your 30-inch-long barrel rifles, or remove the top shelf. The exterior is 60 x 30 x 22 inches.

A nice touch is that the interior is adjustable, so you can store 24 guns inside if you use both sides, or 12 on the left side. You can also opt for shelves throughout, but just plan on around 8 or 10 guns on each side. There is an access port for the dehumidifier, and this brute is heavy enough that a thief would have a difficult time walking away with it. The lock's UL approved, as well, so you'd be good to go with this one.

Stack On® 36-Gun, Fire Resistant, Waterproof, and Convertible Gun Safe Cabinet with Electronic Lock - GSXW-836-DS

Stack On® has been around since the early 1970's, producing quality gun safe cabinets, too chests, file cabinets and a host of other storage products. They have become a well-trusted name in making quality steel products, and this is the top-line, largest gun locker. This particular model is part of their "Total Defense Safes" line of products, so-called because they are rated from the ETL labs as fire-resistant as well as water resistant (according to their spec's, these safes can last in up to 2 feet of standing water for 72 hours!). The unit has a rubber-like gasket along the door, as well as other water-proofing measures.

If you want to keep your guns secure, this safe comes packed with 7 very large live-action bolts, as well as 3 dead bolts on the hinge-side of the door. The door is pry-resistant, making sure nobody gains access to the contents. The locking mechanism is a 3 number combination for simplicity, opened by an austere, 3-spoke handle covered with rubber grips. If you forget the combination and are timed out after 3 incorrect entry attempts, there is also a trouble-key included. And don't worry about replacing batteries, there's an alarm for low battery life, the batteries are simple to replace from the front of the safe.

Stack On safe's gun barrel rests are a patented feature, allowing your scoped guns to be neatly filed in place, using the carpeted gun racks. The gun safe cabinet comes with 6 fully adjustable shelves, so you can store 36 rifles or split the difference and use the safe for storage of other valuables in half of the space. The powder coated, silver and black motif with chrome hardware makes for a pretty sight, as well. At little over 00, this is a rugged piece of equipment that will give you years of enjoyment.

That's the last of the gun safe reviews, you can't go wrong with these brand names at your disposal. Just remember to check the warranties, the independent lab certifications, and you're on your way to owning the gun safe cabinet of your dreams.

How to Print and Color Digital Stamps

In the last article, we discussed exactly what Digital Stamp images were. Now we are going to discuss how to print and color these digital images.

Digital Heat Gun

Before you begin printing your images you will want to give some thought to what type of paper you want to print to get the most satisfactory finished product. Remember some papers do not print well and leave ink wet or damp which will only serve to make a mess of your image causing you frustration.

Digital Heat Gun

As with any stamping you cannot go wrong using your Best cardstock For Coloring. Use a nice thick cardstock of bright white colour which will handle markers, especially alcohol-based markers without bleeding or smearing. However, that is not to say that you cannot use a lesser paper to save cost. Just make sure that the paper has a paper weight of at least 80 lbs, anything lower will not give you the results you desire. This will also allow you to get a nice crisp scoring line without folding creases.

If using a lighter paper you may want to set your printed image before coloring. Setting your image can be achieved in two ways: by heat setting or by embossing.

Let's start with Heat Setting. Once you've printed your image use your heat gun or if you do not have one a hair dryer will work as well, turn it on and hold it 6 to 8 inches from the image. Remember to rotate your image as you dry your print for approximately 15 - 25 seconds. NB, do not hold your heater too close to the paper or you will scorch or burn the paper. While we have never used this method on water colors it dose work well with markers.

Now lets try the other alternative Embossing which is a favourite of a lot of people, and is the simplest method in my opinion, to stop the ink from running or smearing when coloured. To start use your glue and apply it to whatever part of the image you wish to emboss. I personally like to use a glue pen as it allows me to get into small areas and works great with fine detail, but you can use whatever you feel most comfortable with. The embossing pen I use goes on blue and dries to a clear finish thus allowing me to know that the glue is still wet when I sprinkle the embossing powder on the image. Working fairly quickly, before the glue dries, sprinkle any clear embossing powder over your glued areas. Next use your heat gun set the embossing powder in the usual manner (which only takes a few seconds), then let your image cool before starting to colour as normal.

By using this simple yet additional step you can be sure your card results will be guaranteed. Your images will be as beautiful as you want them and save you expense and frustration in the long term.
