Organize Your Emergency Evacuation in 5 Simple Steps

"All for one and one for all!" makes a great family motto when it comes to an emergency evacuation. When everyone has designated jobs and knows exactly what to do, your family can be packed and out of town before most other families grab their toothbrushes. To make this happen and avoid panic, chaos, and needless tears, your family needs an evacuation plan.

Digital Heat Gun

When I first started thinking about the possibility of evacuating from our home, I visualized sheer panic. Immediately, I realized the need for a written list of procedures posted in two or three locations and a family meeting or two to insure that everyone was informed and on board. As I put our evacuation plan together, five basic steps became apparent.

Digital Heat Gun

1. Make provisions for animals.
2. Pack personal necessities, food, and water.
3. Prepare the house.
4. Pack important documents and a computer.
5. Insure the vehicle is ready to go.

Follow these five simple steps to create your own evacuation plan, and then delegate and rehearse.

1. Make provisions for animals

I put this at the top of my plan because of the words in Proverbs 12:10a, "The godly care for their animals," and because I'm crazy about our four dogs and our lone cat, Daisy. There were so many unnecessary tragedies that involved beloved pets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and after watching that unfold, I determined that I would never leave ours behind.

Once you've made the decision to evacuate , one of the first steps should be to contain them. You don't need them underfoot as you rush around, and your kids will be reassured that their beloved pets are being cared for. Delegate this task to one or two family members.

Depending on the size of your dogs and cats, you may want to first load their crate in your vehicle and then the animal(s). So, first on my list is to load the dog crate in the Tahoe, and put each dog inside. We have four small dogs so they all fit, in a cozy sort of way!

Pre-position collars, leashes, and a water and food bowls in the crate, along with some dog food, double-bagged in two large Zip-Locs. (Ants love dog food!) Add the dog, and you're good to go!

Our next step is to put the cat in her crate, and keep her away from the dogs!! If your cat isn't used to being in a carrier, now is the time for Crate-the-Cat practice! Along with her crate, pack a small package of kitty litter and her food.

If you're the proud owner of fish, reptiles, rodents and/or farm animals, consider whether or not you'll take them along, leave them on their own with a plentiful supply of food and water, or transport them to another location. Have a Plan B for their care in case circumstances suddenly change.

2. Personal necessities, food and water

While the designated family member is rounding up the animals, delegate who will be responsible for the following.

o Loading 72 Hour Kits, if you have them. Take some time now to put these kits together while you have time and are not under any duress. I carry a Vehicle 72 Hour Kit in my Tahoe at all times in case of emergencies while we're on the road. If we only had time to grab our Kits, at least we'd have the most necessary items for survival to get us through the first three or four days.
o Load firearms and ammunition. Guns are one of the first things vandals look for, and I don't want them getting into the wrong hands. In a worst case scenario, we may need them for defense.
o Cash. I usually keep this in twenty dollar bills or smaller. In case of a widespread electrical outage, ATMs and credit/debit card machines may not be working. I want to be sure we can pay for hotels, gas and food.
o An emergency toilet: a five-gallon bucket with plastic liners. This bucket also holds a couple of small blankets, toilet paper and a bottle of bleach/water mixture. You can even buy a toilet seat designed to fit one of these buckets. I've read accounts of the Hurricane Ike evacuation in 2008, and I don't want my family using the side of the road as a toilet. Enough said.
o Load additional food and water, as much as there is room for. Your 72 Hour Kits will contain emergency provisions, but extra food will always come in handy. Collapsible water containers are a good option since they gradually take up less space as they're emptied. Water weighs
o Bedding items, such as sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows. How much you can take with you will depend on how much room you have left in your vehicle. I always keep a couple of lightweight blankets rolled up under the back seat, just in case.

3. Prepare the House

As you drive away from your home, no doubt you'll have feelings of sadness and, perhaps, loss. Write out a plan to protect your home if you must evacuate, and you'll increase the chances of having a home to come home to. Here is a checklist I've used.

o Turn off gas and water.
o Go out to electrical panel and switch off everything except for the breakers marked for the kitchen.
o Unplug everything in the house except refrigerator, freezer and a kitchen lamp. Even if our entire neighborhood is evacuated, I would just rather my home look occupied.
o Shut down and unplug the computers.
o Close and lock all windows. Close blinds and curtains.
o Depending on the current weather, turn off air conditioner and/or heat or set them at minimal levels.

4. Pack important documents and a computer

o Load our strong box. (This contains originals of things like Social Security cards and birth certificates.)
o Pack my Grab-and-Go Binder containing copies of vital financial and family documents and my Survival Mom Binder with printed information helpful in emergencies, such as maps and water purification instructions.
o Use a flash drive to save important business and financial information from our desktop computer. Pack flash drive with laptop.
o Pack our laptop computer. Make sure to include the charger!

5. Insure the vehicle is ready to go

Hopefully, you've been keeping an eye on weather and news reports and have made sure your vehicle's gas tank is full. In addition to that simple, obvious step, here are a few more.

o Load extra gas cans, if you have them.
o Pack tools we might need. A claw hammer or a Phillips screw driver might make all the difference in the world in a survival scenario.
o Be sure you have everything necessary for dealing with a flat tire, including a spare.

Depending on how much time we have and how much room is left in the Tahoe, we'll also pack extra clothing. There's a change of clothes or two in our 72 Hour Kits, but if we are gone for days or weeks, we'll need more. We can pack these in large plastic trash bags. Ugly, but they're not as bulky as suitcases. Hey, they could double as raincoats in an emergency!

When our plan was finished, I discussed each step with my husband, and we delegated each task to a different family member. In a crisis situation, assigned tasks will help defuse feelings of panic and confusion. It's more difficult to become hysterical when you have something to focus on. Not impossible! Just more difficult!

I'm very aware that an emergency evacuation may happen while my husband is not at home, so I've made sure that I know how to turn off the gas, water and electricity in case it's just the kids and me.

There's one step missing. Will this really work? How much time will it take, and will there be any room for passengers in the Tahoe once it's loaded?? Obviously, we need an evacuation drill. Sounds like a great summertime family activity to me!

"Hey kids! Let's pretend there's a mountain of red hot lava rushing toward us, and we have to be out of the house in thirty minutes. Everybody know their jobs? Okay! Ready.....GO!!!"

If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, wildfires, and the like, you already know a thing or two about bugging out in a hurry. Share your experiences and tips on this blog.

Trade Secrets to Installing Vehicle Wraps

If you're interested in mastering this craft, here are some inputs from vehicle wrap experts on how to do the job right.

Digital Heat Gun

Expert tips to installing vehicle wraps:

Digital Heat Gun

Vehicle wrap tip #1:

Tape the design to the exterior first before removing the backing of the film. This will ensure that everything is in position with the template. According to an expert, taping the design will allow you to check what the printer came up with. See to it that everything is where it should be.

Vehicle wrap tip #2:

Avoid making additional cuts or pointless marks in your vinyl graphics. To achieve this, remove mirrors and wiper blades and other similar elements.

Vehicle wrap tip #3:

Wet applications make vehicle wrapping more difficult. Experts do not recommend this, as it will result in the breakage of the adhesive. You may not see the effects right away, but it could be damaged before it reaches the life-span recommended. Plus, removal of the vinyl is more convenient if you do a dry installation.

Experts' tools for installing vehicle wraps:
What you need to make the process of installing your wrap smoother and more convenient.

Vehicle wrap tool #1:

Squeegees are necessary for vehicle wrapping. Experts even use two different ones: a felt squeegee for areas that are difficult to wrap, since this will make it possible for you not to scratch the vinyl; the standard squeegee (the hard one) for the rest of the area. A good squeegee is made of a flexible material. The purpose for this is to avoid the squeegee from getting scratched. Scratches on your squeegee will result in what would look like scratch marks on your window graphic.

Vehicle wrap tool #2:

Experts also suggest the use of an air release tool or pin. Some people make do with razor blades to burst bubbles. But this will just end up with your film getting a tear that would cause your vinyl to fall apart.

Using an air release tool allows you to preserve the strength of your film, as it will pop the bubble within its own boundary.

Vehicle wrap tool #3:

Finally, keep a heat gun handy. This will help stretch the film. The recommended kind is called overlaminates.

Stock Market - Trading Rules

Some food for thought on trading rules. Theses are my personal trading rules that aid you on your trading. If you spend some time to understand the concept behind each trading rule this will improve your trading skills and take you to the next level.

Digital Heat Gun

1. MUST have protective stop losses - Having no stop loss is suicidal, the way I see it is if you are trading on margin, the positions that go against you are magnified. You are pretty much exposing your account to destruction. At least having a stop loss your losses are capped, and you are not subjected to your emotions in closing losing trades. Protective stop loss is also very effective in protecting your profits when the market moves in your favor.

Digital Heat Gun

2. NEVER move protective stop loss against you - Moving your pre-determined protective stop loss to allow breathing space is dangerous. Once you have pre-determined your protective stop loss you should stick to your guns. The reason is in the heat of the moment when emotions run ramped you are more likely making your thoughts not with your head but your emotions. By giving your trade more breathing room, (which you should have better planned your protective stop loss) you run the risk of losing more then what you had projected.

3. Detaching emotions from trading - Trading is a business, there is no time to fall in love with your position. Emotions can be very crippling to your trading as rational thinking is clouded my fear and greed. As humans we are emotional beings, there is no way to completely remove emotions we are not robots. But making a conscious effort by using protective stop loss, pre-determined entry points, having a game plan and trading at a peak state will help detach your emotions from trading.

4. NEVER take revenge on the market - From my past experience I have noticed taking revenge on the market I'm guaranteed to lose money. The reason for this is when I place a trade it's already planned with predetermined entries and stops. I have no emotions on my pre-determined prices I have calculated how much I'm willing to lose, I'm applying discipline and I'm following my trading methodology. Placing trades at random levels just to get back at or in the trade is sure thing to lose money; you are applying the opposite of a professional trader. I believe emotions are your greatest enemy in trading. Emotions such as fear and greed, clouds your rational thinking. Sub-consciously this has a detrimental affects especially on your trading methodology as you are not in control of the situation and your emotions, you are pretty much giving your money away to the professional traders that have the discipline to follow their trading plan.

5. NEVER trade when you are not in state - Emotions cloud good judgments, Emotions such greed, fear, frustration the list goes on can have significant affects to your trading account. Money has strong connections to people's emotions.

"Playing with my money is like playing with my emotions" - quote Big Worm from Friday

Even having positive emotions such as optimism has detrimental affects to your trading performance if the market is in a bear market or the market is at a topping phase with euphoria is running ramped.

6. NEVER trade more than 2 instruments in the same sector - Very simple idea, not too expose too much in one sector.

7. Determine and Follow the trend - I have learnt going against the trend is like swimming against a rip. You are bound to go bust! Moving averages 50, 100, 200 are good guides in determining the market trend. Majority of your trades should be based in favor of the market trend, i.e. If the prices are above the 50, 100, 200 MA this would indicate a bullish trend; therefore majority of your trades would be more on the buy side. There will be occasions when the price will retrace, the market trend never moves in a straight line but generally will move in alignment with the moving averages.

8. Cut Losses short and let profits run - Cut losses short is so true! I have experienced in my past when you let a loss get out of hand, and it grows you emotionally become paralyzed to act and you are start hoping to break even to get your money back. As an elite trader, protective stop loss is a MUST! My first aim once I'm in the trade is to get my protective stop loss to my initial entry price to break even. I now have a risk free trade. The next objective is to let my profits run while trailing the price with the protective stop loss to secure profit.

9. Having a balance lifestyle with trading - Trading can be an extremely taxing on your health, mindset, spiritual and relationship. I have felt within myself when I over trade, or have too many trades on or my trades are going against me and I feel like I'm losing control of my trades, it can emotionally spiral out of hand causing negative emotions to your mindset. Once your mindset is tainted it affects pretty much all the important aspects of your life in a negative way. A balance lifestyle is critical for a healthy mindset.

What I do to alleviate the stress is to have an outlet like surfing. I know after surfing I'm at peace with myself and I have a clear head to comeback stronger.

10. Must Log Trades - Keeping a journal of your trades is critical, it helps track your past performance and helps identify aspects on your trading that might need tweaking.

11. Patience - There will always be an opportunity - "One of the best rules anybody can learn about investing is to do nothing, absolutely nothing, unless there is something to do. Most people - not that I'm better than most people - always have to be playing; they always have to be doing something. They make a big play and say, "Boy I am smart, I tripled my money." Then they rush out and have to do something else with that money. They can't just sit there and wait for something new to develop."

"Don't do anything until you know what you are doing. If you make 50 percent two years in a row and then lose 50 percent in the third year, you would actually be worse off than if you just out your money in a money market fund. Wait for something to come along that you know is right. Then take your profit, put it back in the money market fund, and just wait again. You will come out way ahead of everybody else."
- Jim Rogers

Enough said! Knowing there is always an opportunity around the corner will help you alleviate the pressure on trying to catch the tail end of an opportunity that has pass through your hands.

12. Remember don't go for one hit wonders - I have in the past gone in large in lot size thinking this is the trade that is going to make me a fortune, only to be faked out or stopped out incurring a large loss. I have found what works well is not to expect for one hit wonders but to trade smaller lots and continuously capture profit using protective stop loss.

13. Stick to your routine - Read up on all the successful traders and you will realize that they have a set routine. Routine is important as it instill discipline and allows you to get your task done the most efficient way by the end of the day. It helps you stay focus on the today to today task and creates balance in your life.

How to Make Candles at Home in These 7 Easy Steps

Preparation and commitment are the traits needed if you want to learn how to make candles at home. These qualities do not only speak of your patience and discipline but it also determines the extent of your ability as a candle maker. While these qualities seem tough to deal with, you have to keep in mind that candle making is all about skill. That it takes practice and time before one can perfect the art of candle making.

Digital Heat Gun

Knowing the basics of making scented candles is easy. In fact, with the help of websites and online resource sites, you can easily find relative instructions or sources of candle making kits. Starter kits, for one, are helpful if you want to learn how to make candles at home. These kits are also very practical since you do not have to find your materials elsewhere.

Digital Heat Gun

Since this hobby is potentially profitable, the best way to start your venture is through following these tips and suggestions. First, knowing how to make candles at home always starts with the availability of raw materials. These include paraffin wax, wicks, wick holders, thermometer, double boiler and pouring pots. You may also need glass jars, that is if you are about to make container candles. Also, you will be needing items such as pencil, scissors, dye, fragrance oil and glue gun.

Worrying over probable sources of these supplies? Do not fret as you can easily avail them in any local craft store or online shop. Container candles maybe very basic but these candles are the easiest to make. All you need to do is firstly attach the wick into the container. Make sure that each wick is kept really straight.

Second, prepare your wax. Break up wax bars using a hammer. Third, place wax pieces in the double boiler. Fill the bottom pot with half full of water. Bring to a boil. Carefully place the pot filled with wax pieces and let it melt. Fourth, attach your thermometer to ensure that the right amount of temperature is maintained. Remember to melt your wax over medium heat.

Fifth, wait till you reach 190 degrees and stir the mixture but not overdo it. You can now add your chosen dye then simmer the colored wax mixture for another 30 minutes. Sixth, add in your desired scent. Lastly, pour the melted wax mixture into glass jars or containers and then let it cool for about six hours.

As a first timer who wants to know how to make candles at home, it is imperative to constantly practice and try doing small batches of candles. Do not attempt to produce large quantities of candles. Besides, you need to maximize your money by purchasing a suitable amount of supplies and materials. It is also best if you will seek advice from friends, particularly ones that share this interest. Do not hesitate to ask for tips and tricks as this will help you in improving your candle making skills.

FHI Hot Sauce - Repair Flaws For Healthy Hair

It seems like no matter what style hair you like the most that it some how will require heat to achieve it. Whether it's to straighten it or curl it you will need to apply heat from a flat iron or a curling iron. This constant and daily heat will begin to dry out your hair and eventually cause damage to your hair if you are not protecting your hair. There are many products on the market today that will help to keep your hair moisturized through the constant heat - FHI Hot Sauce is one of these heat protection hair products that you can purchase.

Digital Heat Gun

This product will most certainly offer you the best possible protection and can do wonders for your already dry and damaged hair as well. Professional hairstylists have been using this product in their salons for a few years now and it's no wonder. You can simply apply FHI Hot Sauce to your hair every time before you straighten or curl your hair. The heat from the flat iron or curling iron is going to activate the Hot Sauce, and it will begin to deeply penetrate your hair giving it the moisture that it needs to look healthy and flawless. Oh and it's going to SHINE too!

Digital Heat Gun

FHI heat Hot Sauce uses the best ingredients that are all actually beneficial to your hair. Let me explain so that you completely understand what I am talking about. First off, FHI Hot Sauce is not silicon based. The reason this is so good is because silicon based products, while they might initially look good, after a while that shine and nice looking hair begins to dwindle away to hair that is filled with residue offering you a dull and dirty look. Another reason why FHI Hot Sauce is so good is because it uses jojoba crystals, which helps to keep your hair residue free for an extended period of time. These crystals will also be the key to repairing already damaged hair and prevent your hair from any further damage. It's actually pretty amazing what these jojoba crystals can offer your hair.

Of course FHI Heat Hot Sauce is not the only product on the market, but it is one of the most popular. FHI Hot Sauce is an all natural product. Meaning it does not use any harmful or foreign chemicals which to me is a great advantage over many of the other companies.

Great looking hair is important, but what is even more important is that you keep your hair looking healthy.

Flat Screen Television Plasma Versus LCD TV Screen Review

If you're looking to buy a flat-screen television, you probably have already asked yourself which is better, Plasma or LCD. We shall attempt to shed some light on this subject for you.

Nuts and Bolts - The technology of LCD and Plasma Systems

Digital Heat Gun

While both Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Plasma panels look similar there is a fundamental difference in the way they work. Both use precise electrical charges to control a matrix of cells to produce a picture. However, in the case of plasma screens the cell contains plasma gas while the LCD cell is a fine layer of liquid crystal held between two layers of glass. This fundamental difference produces differing results which have advantages and disadvantages depending on their application. So let's try and find out which system is best for your needs.

Picture This - Comparing Image Quality

If this article was about Flat Screens verses Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV sets there would be no contest. Both Plasma and LCD screens produce far superior and accurate images than the older CRT technology can hope to - with a greatly reduced footprint. But here we are interested in the the relative merits of flat screens. There used to be an easy quality distinction to make between LCD and plasma screens based on the amount of light each system produces from its cells. Plasma used to have the advantage of producing a brighter image due to the inherent property of its cells to produce their own light. In order to produce a visible image LCD cells have to be lit from behind - traditionally by fluorescent tubes. This has the disadvantage that even black cells have a little light bleeding through them which reduces contrast. However, backlight technology for LCD has improved significantly in recent years with the introduction of LED banks replacing the older fluorescent tube system. The result is that there is negligible difference in the quality of blacks between the two systems - although purists will still tell you that Plasma rules this roost.

Cooking with Gas - The advantages of Plasma

We have covered the advantage of better contrast control with Plasma's ability to produce blacks that are deeper and more true. Another advantage of gas over crystal is that it reacts to electrical stimuli faster. In ordinary terms this means that it can turn on and off faster. This speed advantage reduces the blurring effect that some flat screens produce when displaying fast moving images. As with the backlight technology issue, advances in LCD technology has reduced the millisecond response gap between Plasma and LCD cells to such a minimal level so as to be almost indistinguishable. Of course our purist friends will continue to argue the toss and will be more than happy to produce millisecond response charts to prove their point. For us mere mortals the difference would be hard to find with the naked eye.

Plasma enthusiasts are quick to point out that their preferred system has a better image fidelity at wider viewing angles. We've all seen the effect on flat screen pictures as we move farther to the side of the panel. The brightness and contrast begin to significantly deteriorate and eventually we experience what some describe as a 'solarising effect' where the darker end of the image spectrum inverts and all sorts of weird effects are produced. Historically this was always more problematic in LCD systems with plasma being able to produce a far more true image at far greater angles. But, we are going to have to say it again; advances in LCD technology...well, you know the rest.

Crystal Clear - The Advantages of LCD

The major advantage of LCD over plasma is that the system is far more compact and individual cells can be faithfully reproduced at smaller sizes. Another advantage is that LCD screens can make use of plastic where Plasma uses glass. What does this mean? It means that you can get more pixels into a smaller screen size, which means better resolution the amount of space you have. It also means that the units are less bulky, lighter and produce smaller footprints. Need to save space? Need a TV for your caravan? Buy LCD.

Fans of LCD will be more than happy to point out that Plasma screens experience something called 'screen burn-in', something unassociated with LCD screens. This phenomenon is caused when a single image is left on screen for a long period which burns a 'ghost' of that image into the plasma cells. In the past this became such an issue on computer monitors that it gave rise the 'screensaver', which is now more a novelty than a system for actually saving your screen from burn-in. Plasma had made huge advances in reducing this effect, it is now hardly an issue worth worrying about.

Are you an eco-warrior? Do you check that every appliance is turned off at night? Then LCD may be for you. LCD screens consume far less power than their Plasma cousins and produce less heat. LCD screens also have a longer life span lasting up to three times the number of hours it takes to loose half their brightness than Plasma screens. This not only gives Liquid Crystal the moral high ground in the green debate but also makes LCD screens more economical to run with less power demands and longer periods between renewals.

Pocket the difference - What about cost?

Plasma has an increasing cost advantage as the screen size gets bigger, so much so that the price of LCDs beyond the 50 inch mark become almost ludicrous. This is why plasma has become synonymous with large screen entertainment. At the small screen end of the market it becomes a much harder fight with LCD units producing good economic results especially when taking into account their longer lifespan and reduce energy consumption.

Skip to the end - Which is best for me?

If you are turning your front room into your own sports bar and fill you wall with premiership footy or perhaps you're trying to recreate the golden age of cinema; then plasma is probably for you. Unless you are seriously loaded LCD is simply far to costly for screens over 50 inches to be viable for most pockets.

If you are after something sleek, elegant and compact to compliment your minimalist living arrangements or just need to conserve space on your narrow boat then LCD is more likely to suit your needs. And, you can say you're saving the planet at the same time.

Another consideration is light. Do you live in a dark dungeon with only candles to light your way or do you live in a glass solarium surrounded by blinding sunlight? The argument over which platform performs best in strong light goes back and forth with each new generation of screen and each new technological advance. Plasma used to have an edge in the light until LCD produced LED backlighting. There was also the issue of Plasma screens being glass as opposed to LCD plastics so you'd have to worry about the position of possible ref elections but then Pioneer brought out their non-reflective Kuro plasma range and we are back where we started. The answer is that it is much of a muchness, but if you have the opportunity to test and compare the two systems in a similar environment to your chosen location then take advantage of this and decide for yourself which best suits your environment.

Finally there is the HD issue. At the moment there is little HD content available to take advantage of LCDs dominance in the resolution stakes but 1080p will eventually become the standard signal resolution. If it were the case now then we would recommend LCD for its native ability to apply pixel for pixel resolutions at lower cost. However plasma manufacturers are producing ever higher resolution screens at ever smaller sizes and will be able to produce screens that don't require 'scalers' to watch HD. By the time HD becomes the norm, we predict there will be little to choose between the two platforms in this regard.

If you're a dedicated techie and simply have to know that you are seeing every pixel, get the LCD. If you don't mind a bit of scaling but just want your picture really big stick with the plasma.
